So, you are probably asking, who is this "Doctor Happy Mac?"

Well, Doctor Happy Mac is me, Andrew Stephens. I have been using Macs since 1984, which is when they were introduced into the UK, you probably don't remember the now famous Apple superbowl advert based on the book 1984, but I do.

When Macs arrived at my college I noticed them straight away, two funny little boxes with tiny screens, no hard drives and little memory. Still, I wrote my dissertation on one, while everyone else in my year studiously ignored them. From then on it was out into the real world and after a year or so the design companies I worked at started to get interested in Macs, and what they could do. Each time they turned to the only person in the company that seemed to understand these funny little machines, me. So by default I introduced Macs into several companies, set them up, maintained them and integrated them into the companies workflow.

I remember the joys of system six, the introduction of the multi finder (running more than one application at a time). I remember feeding a floppy disc into the machine time and time again to copy files, since there was no hard drive to copy the data from. I remember desk accessories (now returned as widgets), the font/da mover, system 7 and colour, spectre supreme (wireframe tank game), syquest drives (where did my data go!!!), suitcase 3, quark 3, illustrator 88, modems, isdn (wow that was fast), OS X 10.0 (what did that do), and much more. Mind you I've forgotten a lot of the horrors too, the system bomb, conflicting extensions and they joys of getting early versions of system 7 online.

Along the way I set up my own business (a design studio) and ended up looking after multiple macs myself (well no one else would).

So, why is this important, or even interesting? Well, it shows I know my Mac onions, but then so do a lot of technicians. More importantly I know about using Macs in the real world. I know why some of the standard solutions to Mac problems may be nonsense for you. I understand what you need your Macs to do and how to make them do it. I've also learnt patience (or a good facsimile of it) and developed a sense of both humour and proportion.

I'm happy to share this all with you in order to make you as happy with your Mac as I normally am with mine.

Give me a call.
