PowerMac 8600

  • Available Feb 1997 to Nov 1997
  • Came with System 7.5
  • Internal CD Drive and Zip drive
  • Maximum RAM 1GB

The 8600 sported a 604e processor running at between 200 and 300 Mhz. It also offered 3 expansion slots and a whole heap of memory. The clincher for the 8600 was however the innovative side opening door that revealed the computers inners making upgrading simpler than it had ever been before. This fearute survives to this day on the Intel Mac Pro range.

With it's side mounted power unit the 8600 was more stylish than Macs had been for a while and it made a good all round system.

DHM gives the 8600 4 out of 5.

Old 8600's pop up on ebay fairly regularly with almost zero value. Not being capable of running OS X limits there usefulness in the modern world.
